Friend in the city!
"Are you sure you have company?" She asked as I called her after finishing my 7.20 pm news bulletin at All India Radio. I had to wait till 8.30 for FM headlines at the station without any company. "Yes, I do" I lied and kept the phone. If I said no she would come then and there. But I could not call her just because I did not have company for some time. But this friend of mine whose name I shall keep anonymous in the post is that person who can be called anytime and she will be there.
Younger than me yet understanding my issues well, this friend has opened up new arenas of herself with me recently even when I knew this girl since childhood. You may know people, but it takes time to be friends! It does...
Anyway, the post isnt about the friendship. It is about need of people in life especially life in a city. I am not that Konkona Sen Sharma from the movie 'Wake Up Sid' who needs a friend in the city of Mumbai and finds the mate in contrasting Sid. I dont live in the city. But I travel there. Almost every day. Most of my work, whatever little stuff I do like being s casual newsreader and translator at All India Radio, taking a few lectures at a college and doing Research at University it is all in the city. And the city is at the distance of 1hour from my village by car and 2 hours by bus. Buses, actually! I have to change 3 buses to reach at my work places and the 3 more to get back to home.
And this travel at times tires me off although I enjoy it. Being in the city for almost 10 hours is nice but without company it sucks. And this friend of mine, the anytime available friend is that one person in the city who has been there. To pick me, drop me when I could not find any other mode of transport. She is the one who picks up food for me when I am hungry after work. At times, I feel overwhelmed and guilty about how this girl does so many things for me. They seem little but everyone doesnt have so much of time to do this for others, no matter how close you are to them.
We have many friends. Good ones, best ones, besties and bffs. We share the emotional space with them and we hang out some time. And then there are some friends who will be phsically be present when you are all alone. And you need them! You need this people...especially when you know you cant do it alone. And finding such people is a fortune!
I dont feel insecure, afraid anymore about being stuck in the city. I know this friend of mine will even drive me till home no matter what time it is. This is not the place to thank her or even the time to describe this friendship. She calls me her best friend. But I shall not bind this free girl in any of my descriptive relations but will still call her 'the friend in the city'!
From the country girl! :)
